i'm gonna give the 7 songs thing a go, but like doug i'm gonna find it very difficult to cull down from ~650 cds and countless other mp3s..

beck - nobody's fault but my own
i feel that beck does slow, meaningful songs very well, and this one strongly strikes a chord with me; a few years ago i use to put this on repeat for several times, much to juile's chagrin

tori amos - doughnut song
i have a lot of memories and feelings tied to this album, but this song spoke to me and seemed very important in a way i couldn't identify. i was amused when months later i read/heard an interview with tori where she commented this was the capstone song so to speak of boys for pele and that the entire album hinged on/around this song. i love this entire album...maybe i should do 7 albums instead...
others songs would be original sinsuality, liquid diamonds, crazy, space dog, butterfly, here in my head, sister janet, and thoughts.

coil - sex with sun ra
it's very hard to pick from all of the the coil catalouge, but this is a great mix of balance doing his twisting of words/phrases with a haunting voice. other notable mentions would be 'the first five minutes after death' and 'a white rainbow'

cure - disintigration
i've listened to a lot of the cure, but the title song from the first album i got from them is the one that i still crank the loudest and scream along to the lyrics till i'm horase (when i'm alone in the car).

johnny cash - when the man comes around
to me, this song sums up all that the man in black was.

passengers soundtrack (u2) - slug
u2 of the 90's was the best, and this album allowed them to completely noodle around with flood and make some very different tracks. this one isn't that far out there, but for some reason i'm always pulling it up again and again. the beat of the song is a subdued pulsing, but the lyrics have an ache to them..and the combination of those intrigue me.

radiohead - lozenge of love
again, another artist where it's hard to pick just one. but i really like this song for its sound and more for its lyrics; it's simply about wanting somone to be there for you when you're in pain, but not being there for anyone else when they need you. i find way too many ppl are like this, which makes me appreciate my close friends very much as they are not. i really dig 'lucky' as well, and doug nailed the description of it; also 'no surprises' and 'fog'.

music: tori amos - caught a lite sneeze (sessions at west 54th)
