i guess you can infer from the lack of updates that i got the rest of my computer parts and have done nothing but mess with it since. tuesday afternoon i get the stuff at work and head home to build this thing up. put it all together with no real hitches. the heatsink scared the ba-jesus out of me; took a _lot_ of force to clamp that thing down. and it's hyooge. so, i get it all in the case, fire it up, and it won't get past the post screen. i fumble around with it a bit, praying the processor isn't fried or something. finally get it working when i take everything back out of the case and hook up the mobo while it's laying on a static envelope in my living room. ...so i twiddle with the bios, let it warm up and get use to having juice run through it and put it all back in the case...and it works this time. *shrug* wed night i come in and partition the drive, which took more effort than usuall since fdisk won't see anything more than 32gb...so i had to dig up gdisk (which is even less user friendly than fdisk) and partition it up. i installed windows, got the nic in, and started installing, installing, installing..updating, and installing more. played a little jedi knight 2. pretty. thurs night i was going to put the sound card in and install a few more games and play with all the high end settings i've not been able to use for the past 2 years. well..as always, what i thought would be simple just blew up in my face. the sound card installed, but wouldn't play any sound. winamp would show that it started playing a song, then it'd just stop...so i used the only other set of drivers for the card (which are beta btw, but worked fine on my old machine) and after i got those installed the computer would just power off when it got to loading the desktop.... so i take the card out and attempt to use the onboard audio. i hook up the cd audio cable to the mobo and fire it back up. then it starts having all these issues that were _very_ much like the problems i was just having with my old machine. cdrom would stop working, problems even making it past the post screen, machine would lock up with HD light on solid, device manager saying the secondary ide controller wasn't even there. ugh. i tried another ide cable, but that didnt' seem to help. sometimes it'd work just fine though. so i undo the audio and that doesn't help. so i just totally disconnect the entire cdrom, power, cable (at cdrom and mobo) totally. and just play in windows for a bit. tried to install some other stuff from the HD, but ran into some problems there. stuff was rar'd up and my version of winrar nor win cmd would recognize it. so i decide to enable the audio with no cd rom action. that goes fine. then i get more brave and hook the cdrom back up, and it seems to work ok. so i play jedi knight for 90 mins or so...which had to have the cdrom to start and load lvls...so...i dunno. just weird. and one last oddity. i'm pretty sure i turned the computer off last night..cause it is a bit louder than the other machines. and when i got up this morning, the computer was on and just sitting at the windows desktop.
gonna get my haircut this weekend. doesn't quite need it, but i'll be in nashville next weekend for julie's b-day....so might as well get it done while i'm home. gonna see doug. not sure what we're gonna do exactly. might hook up with the shizaft and jody.
*sigh* julie poked fun at me for saying it, but i don't want to leave my computer for the weekend. it wouldn't be so bad if it hadn't started acting up with the cdrom and shit last night. ah well. it ain't going nowhere i guess.
